A truly unique burn wood wall art created of larch tree cross-cut slabs. Their surface and sides were smoothed and polished for clear exposition of rings drawing. The edges were gently rounded which effected in a cleansed shape of each piece of wood making it both modern-and-reclaimed looking wooden wall art. The irregular shapes of the larch tree pieces with their clear ring drawings are an excellent opportunity to take a moment to relax and contemplate the artwork of nature…
The growing for last few years “burned wood” trend in designing brings an ancient wood charring technique, originated in Japan in the 18th, back to life. The technique was originally used to preserve wood to make it weatherproof. The process is environmentally friendly and doesn't contribute to harmful pollution. Nowadays, as a current trend in modern architecture, you meet burned wood being used for making furniture and wooden wall panels and artwork. This is because the visual effect is excellent to fit into both modern and rustic settings.
The shown artwork is a previously sold one. This listing is for 47"x25,5" (120x65cm) piece. We will custom make similar panels of this design. We can customize the dimensions, color (natural or burn), shape and even used spices of tree. Each artwork will be absolutely unique and never exactly the same as shown on pictures.
The slices of wood are stuck to the dark gray (or customized color) painted plywood with strong glue which give this wall hanging an aesthetic outlook. All panels come with tooth hangers attached on the back for quick and easy mounting on a wall.
The process of creation the wooden artwork.
The whole process of making this unique wooden wall art takes much time. Although this process is a lot of fun, a lot of hard work is also done. But the effects are truly rewarding… Starting from claiming the tree to the final finishing, each piece passes through our hands several times. It has to be treated individually with due care and attention to fully bring out its natural beauty and to not interfere with its natural character. We start from finding and buying the tree from state or private forest (larch tree is not very common), then we air dry it for a period of 6 up to 24 (!) months. Afterwards we kiln dry the wood to eliminate insects that lives inside. Then the tree is cleaned, cross cut, shaped (with simple tools), smoothed and sanded. Only now is the time to create an artwork - laying down the mosaic of slices according to the ealier design. Although Shou Sugi Ban technique is great to preserve wood, we still each piece is impregnated each piece with an organic oil to prevent them from further cracking and color changing.
Our eco approach
We stick to our environmentally friendly approach throughout the entire manufacturing process. We try to utilize the pieces of wood as much as we can. Cut-offs from large wood pieces are used to make smaller forms and decorations. Wood chips provide our workshop with heat. Sawdust goes to a composting facility to prepare fertile ground for other trees and plants.
In order to keep its naturalness and freshness, wood demands the best preparations. Caring for the environment and your comfort, we impregnate our furniture and protect each piece against dust and dirt using organic oils and waxes only. We work with sellected British Fiddes & Son, German Livos and Finnish Tikkurila oils which are based on natural components: linseed oil, waxes, resin and wood oils. The composition of these is either 100 % organic or contains trace amounts of solvents. These oils don’t cover the wood with a chemical skin. Organic oils and waxes enhance the beauty of the wood and protect it very well. And, what is most important: organically impregnated wood does not lose any of its freshness or naturalness!

The pieces of wood dry off for a long time. It is a natural process of an organic matter. It effects in checks and cracks which are elements of the design of each piece. The ongoing process of drying off may increase existing cracks on the sides or ends of pieces or generate new ones. These variations are part of the beauty of the wood and have been planned in the design of each piece. The wood can slightly change its color over time, the intensity of this change depends on exposure to sunlight and heat. The warranty does not cover these changes. To learn more about drying off and color change of solid wood go to additional information and FAQs section: https://www.etsy.com/shop/FreeTreeStudio/policy?ref=shopinfo_policies_leftnav
WOOD CRACKING AND COLOR CHANGE
Wood is a hygroscopic matter which means it tends to maintain the same amount of moisture as the surrounding air. Each tree accumulates a large amount of juices, whose main ingredient is water. The pieces of wood we use are dried before built to furniture. During the air and kiln drying most of the wood vapour. The tempo of drying depend on the mass of the piece, in general a more massive piece needs more time to vapour the moisture. At this time the log or other piece of wood shrinks which almost always results in cracking on the sides or ends of a pieces. The pieces of wood may still crack even when assembled into frame. Each piece will continue to loose moisture when it arrives to its final destination as it needs to acclimatize itself to the lower humidity of its new environment. The existing cracks can deepen and new ones may appear. This is a natural result of a further shrinking. Such is the beauty of the natural wood , which works all the time astonishing us with new cracks that spontaneously arise in the block. They highlight the natural character of the wood and can’t be deemed as ‘’defects” of the furniture. Cracking doesn’t affect the piece's functionality or structural strength and will not result in a refund or compensation.

• avoid placing hot cups or vessels directly neither or on the wooden elements nor tampered glass table tops.
• keep your furniture away from the radiator
• to remove the dust use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment
• wipe away surface marks using a clean, damp cloth.
• avoid strong, aggressive – acid containing commercial cleaners and polishes. We can supply you we proper detergents at your purchase.
